Opera at Jimbour 2009
What a day! The most recent “Opera at Jimbour” in July 2009 attracted a record attendance of more than 8,000 music lovers.

The performance highlighted the extraordinary contribution made by the Noonan family to Queensland’s arts and cultural landscape. The family performed together for the first time with Tyrone and Katie presenting ARIA Award-winning songs they created for their band, George, as well as selections from their solo albums. Maggie and Katie delighted with popular operatic arias and uplifting contemporary songs while Brian complemented a package of sheer enjoyment which attracted a standing ovation response.
The forty-seven piece Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Guy Noble provided the musical backing, as well as a jazz quintet made up of Brisbane’s finest - Jamie Clark, Zac Hurren, Owen Newcomb, Steven Newcomb and John Parker. Iconic Australian actor Barry Otto hosted the afternoon event in warm Jimbour winter sunshine.
Truly a day to remember for the whole family.

Despite the mothballing of Jimbour's wine business, we are all looking forward to the event being staged again in 2011 as part of the Queensland Music Festival with sponsorship from the Queensland Government. Watch this space for further information.

History

In 2003, the Queensland Music Festival (then known as the Queensland Biennial Festival of Music) staged the first Opera at Jimbour attended by 4500 people.

The most recent Opera at Jimbour was held in July 2009 with the audience now growing to 8,000.

The Opera is staged every two years with guests gathering on the lawns with chairs and picnic blankets to enjoy the performance. A miniature tent city springs up around the Amphitheatre for the day with local organisations manning food stalls and displaying local arts and produce. Opera Picnic lunches can be ordered from the Cellar Door.

Entry to the Opera is free, courtesy of State Government sponsorship.

Visitors can combine their stay in the region with the enjoyment of a tour of the magnificent gardens of Jimbour House.
