Jimbour - Arts and Culture
In the heyday of Sir Joshua Peter Bell, Jimbour was acknowledged as "the Mecca of Civilisation on the Darling Downs". During this time, Jimbour played host to important scientific and cultural visits - even, on one occasion, a circus.

In more recent times Jimbour's role as a cultural centre has revived. An Amphitheatre in the grounds provides the setting for major cultural events and performances - including the bi-ennial "Opera at Jimbour" sponsored by the State Government as part of the Queensland Music Festival.

Dalby Regional Arts Council Concerts

Starting in 1976, concerts organized by the Dalby Arts Council have been held both within the House itself on a twice-yearly basis and, more recently, a Jazz in the Hangar event has joined the repertoire.

Leading artists including pianists Piers Lane and Antony Peebles, groups such as Spiros Rantos and Brachi Tilles , and Viva La Musica are among the artists who have performed at these events.

The August 2004 Concert by Viva La Musica attracted encores at both performances. The Artists on this occasion comprised Eugenie Costello, Timothy Munro, Suzie Gregory and Elizabeth Green. Timothy is a great-great-grandson of Sir Joshua Peter Bell.

Other Events

Jimbour also hosts a range of other musical and cultural events which are publicised during the year. These have included a Country and Western Concert in the Amphitheatre and performances of Shakespeare on the veranda and grounds of the historic home.

Sponsorships

In addition to hosting cultural events, Jimbour supports the Arts through sponsorships of

  • the Queensland Music Festival,

  • the Queensland Orchestra

  • the Queensland Ballet
